Who is this course for?

Students will go on an 8 week art adventure with our expert teacher Mr. Joshua. Each week students will learn different aspects of art like portraits, figure drawing, still life, animals and ofcourse understanding basic techniques like lighting, shading, etc. . This is a beginner level art camp and we aim to prep the kids for different competitions once they are through the intermediate and advanced levels.

Please Note: As we do small group Drawing Lessons for Beginners so the published dates are tentative and can be slightly moved depending on the enrollments.

Lesson 1 : Drawing Faces and Portraits
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser, mirror

A brief introduction and discussion about art, drawing, and what the students are expecting from the Beginners Drawing Lessons.
Examine the basic structure of faces – eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc. – and how they fit together.
Using a mirror, draw a self portrait of ourselves. (If the student doesn’t have a mirror, they can use a photo or draw someone else’s face.)

Lesson 2 : Figure Drawing
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser

Talk about and examine the basic body structure and proportions, using the 7-head rule.
Look at pictures of different people with different body types – skinny, fat, muscular, tall, short, etc. – look at how this affects their proportions.
Have each student find a photo of a person (e.g. a celebrity) where they can see their whole body, and draw it using the methods discussed.

Lesson 3 : Still-Life
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser, some items from around the house (e.g. a bowl of fruit, a mug, etc.)

Look at some examples of still life paintings. Examine how even in the more abstract examples, it’s clear what the artist was painting from the shapes they use.
Look at example photos of objects and break down their shapes to help draw them on the page.
Allow the students time to draw their own objects (if a student is missing items to draw, let them search for a reference image instead).

Lesson 4 : Landscapes and Environments
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser

Look at examples of landscape paintings and photography – notice the background, middle ground, and foregrounds, and how details fade the further back they are.
Briefly discuss how in landscapes, the details don’t need to be perfect – each single tree or building does not need to be drawn in full-detail! Just enough that we know what it is in the bigger picture.
Let students find a picture of a place they like (e.g. somewhere they would like to visit, their favourite park, etc.) and allow time for them to draw it.

Lesson 5 : Animals
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser

Talk and show how the use of shapes in still life drawing can be used for drawing anything – even living animals! Circles, triangles, squares, and lines can all be used to break down the body shape into a more manageable drawing.
Go through some examples as a class together to allow practise.
Let the students find a picture of their favourite animal – then draw it! The teacher will be handy to help with any queries if they get stuck on how to break shapes down.

Lesson 6 : Lighting, Shading, and Colour
Tools needed: Paper, pencil, eraser, colouring pencils

Look at pictures before and after shading and/or colour was added. Which version looks more interesting? Why is this?
Explain how light/shade works with basic 3D shapes (sphere and cube), and how light moves around in a 3D space.
Look at different shading techniques – block, hatch, cross-hatch, stippling.
Discuss the colour wheel and basic colour theory – complementary colours, etc. – and how these colour combinations can make a painting look more interesting.
Have the students draw a series of shapes on their page, and spend some time experimenting with how the lighting, shading, and colours might look from different angles on each shape. (drawing arrows to show lighting direction can help!)

Lesson 7 & 8 : Final Project [1/2]
Tools needed: Paper (thick card or a nice canvas will also work for this project!), pencil, eraser

Have a look at some different famous paintings, and talk briefly on their styles and influences. Ask the students what influences and inspires them?
Have the students look for pictures of something that inspires them or makes them feel happy! Think about how they could turn it into an interesting painting (e.g. a portrait of a special person, a collage of their favourite thing…

Things you should know before taking the HUNARly classes:

1. Every Lesson at HUNARly is great learning, please set a reminder for the dates and timings of the Online Programme so that the child does not miss on the subject. We start our lessons on time, so make sure to join the link a few minutes before the class starts.

3. After enrolling to the course, you will get access to ‘Learning Portal’ Tab. You can see the class notes listed, but we recommend the children to practice only what is completed in the class, and not to rush for lessons ahead. The teacher can sometimes go slow or go ahead in the Learning Portal depending on the session’s progress.
4. As these are small group lessons, so the course start date or classes during the holidays are tentative and can be slightly moved if more than 70% of participants have requested a change or are not available.
5. During the course, if the teacher is not available, then we have the right to arrange a cover teacher or extend the course dates. We handpick the best teachers and do the due diligence for you so that the child’s learning is not discontinued.
6. We are only responsible for the teaching of the courses and not the exam registrations. We can guide you upon request but we encourage you to be on top with the dates and submissions so that you do not miss out on important deadlines.

Any cancellation requests after payment will be refunded as HUNARly credits only, which means you can use the amount for your next course booking. We recommend you go through the course agenda, teacher profile, course fee, and after that proceed to enroll in the course.
