Sutton Round 2 English: What Parents Should Know
Sutton Round 2 English requires children to produce an extended piece of writing from an unfamiliar prompt. This might be a story, letter, article, speech, diary entry or description.
Success is not about memorising an impressive composition. Children must understand the purpose, audience and form of the task and adapt their writing accordingly.
A useful preparation tool is to recognise the different purposes hidden within a question. A speech may ask a child to argue, persuade and advise, while a story may require them to explore, imagine and entertain. Other tasks might involve informing and explaining or reviewing and commenting.
Strong responses usually include:
- A clear plan
- Relevant and developed ideas
- An appropriate voice
- Accurate, purposeful vocabulary
- Secure spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Time for proofreading
When practising, ask your child:
“Who am I writing for, why am I writing and what should this form sound like?”
